Founded in March 2015, the Roboy Team is an interdisciplinary society from the Technische Universität München. Comprised of engineers, scientists, and artists who are makers and creatives with a hands-on mentality. The team has come together with the aim of designing and building a new version of Roboy every year.

Current Roboy Teams

People

Roboy has been bound to his custom-built wheelchair for too long – It is time for him to stand up!

Roboy’s muscle units are inherently nonlinear and difficult to model: We are investigating new control strategies on human sized legs by applying machine learning techniques. To challenge the lack of sensation in Roboy‘s legs, such as position and the forces acting on them, we are equipping the legs with inertial measurement units, force torque sensors and motion capture sensors. In parallel we are developing smaller muscle units to fit in Roboy-sized legs.

People

By extending Roboy‘s set of cognitive skills, Roboy will independently communicate with people.

The aim is to enable Roboy to detect human presence, recognise people and facial expressions, using machine vision. In addition, by applying natural language processing (NLP) and synthesis, Roboy will become a fluent speaker and a great listener.

People

We are working hard to bring Roboy to Virtual Reality (VR) and emulate his sensual inputs, such as vision and hearing.

Using the HTC Vive lighthouse we are developing a system to track Roboy and arbitrary objects. We are planning to use a special custom-built glove, developed by one of our affiliated students, that provides force feedback on the user‘s hands. In the future, a whole suit could be equipped with this technology to offer anyone the possibility to feel like Roboy.

People

Keeping the world informed about Roboy‘s latest news and making
sure Roboy‘s presence at your events is a success.

We want to ensure that Roboy‘s funding allows further development. Update our supporters about Roboy‘s progress and his partners.

People

Not everyone can have a Roboy, and not everything we plan for Roboy is safe for him. That is why we are implementing a simulation model for
musculoskeletal robots with the industry‘s standard simulator Gazebo.

The integration with the Human Brain Project (HBP), allows researchers world-wide to test brain inspired algorithms on Roboy.

Our Partners

To realize the Roboy project, we need the support of our sponsors. We are glad that you became an integral part of the next generation of humanoid robots and are looking forward to continue working with you.
Many thanks for the excellent cooperation!
